Speedway

Speedway is the sports equivalent of a car ride on a motorway. Drivers race motorcycle-sized vehicles through closed-off lanes. Like a car race, the vehicles are set up in a series of three lanes. The races are held across three to four laps, with riders dropping into the middle of each lane after exiting the middle section of the track. Each race is separated into two to four classes for bikes of varying engine sizes and makes, racing speeds, and rider experience. Races are highly competitive, and many racers will race a variety of motorcycles in just a few weeks.

Here’s how racers describe the sport:

Fast: “It’s like racing around a track with other people. It’s always fun. It’s a ton of fun to race.”

Light: “It’s fast and different from any other race or sport.”

Wide: “Like the drag races you see at the [recreational] traffic intersections.”

Fun: “Racing is the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life.”

The Oddest Racing Activity

One of the most unusual sports around is motorcross. Motorcycle riders must compete in freestyle motocross (FMX) contests that are not in a pit lane or field. Instead, riders are lined up in a circle on the asphalt of a dirt track. Each rider rides alone at high speeds in the center of the circle, and most riders jump over obstacles and perform stunts off a variety of motorcycles.

Cycling: Motorcycle riders ride in a variety of sporting competitions that require complete strangers to ride together for a short time. The competitions can last minutes or several hours, and the riders race without their helmets. The riders do not know any other riders, and the competition is very difficult and sometimes deadly.

A simple cycling race is almost always full of obstacles. As riders race around a dirt or paved road at high speeds, they must maneuver sharp turns, narrow pathways, one-way paths, people walking on the roads, road debris, bicycle riders, and other vehicles. Motorcycle racing is the type of racing that is featured in the 2013 action movie, The Fast and the Furious. The competitions range from running full-speed down an open road at high speeds (most of the time with no problem) to riding through water and through all kinds of obstacles (some of the time without problem). There are plenty of bad and stupid cycling riders, and some of them can hurt or kill other riders with a simple bump in the road. Some riders pedal with one hand, allowing them to break their leg or brake their leg if they hit a curb or crash into another rider. Then, of course, there are the famous bad cycling accidents, which happen more often than most people realize.

How do Speedway races work?

Unlike most sports, Speedway races involve no rules or boundaries. Most Speedway races are much faster than motorcycle races or motorcycle races. Also, drivers do not know how to ride a motorcycle, so the race is usually not as competitive. Most Speedway races are just for entertainment. Drivers race motorcycles that are at least 50 horsepower or more and with motorcycle engines that are at least 200 cubic centimeters. The bikes are usually supercharged to be able to reach the speed limits of the track. Races are done on a track that has at least two straights and one long straightaway at the end of the track.

The Speedway races are very similar to car races. As the cars and motorcycles race through the course, cars will sometimes run in the dirt or run wide in the middle of the road. The racers will try to run through the middle of the cars in the opposite direction. Sometimes, a car will cross the tracks and run in the opposite direction on the opposing side of the track. The cars will try to pass other cars or cars will try to pass the cars. Cars and motorcycles will try to hit each other while racing. Cars will try to hit the walls and other cars or motorcycles will try to hit other cars or motorcycles. Sometimes, the racers will crash when cars or motorcycles collide with each other or the walls and other cars or motorcycles. Usually, the racing vehicles are not going at the speed limit or on a track that is even. Some speedway races are very dangerous. This is especially true when a motorcycle hits a car at high speeds or the race car hits a motorcycle at very high speeds. This occurs more often than most people think.

A motorcycle racer will probably break a leg or two or maybe even lose a hand when racing on the same track as another racer. Most of the motorcycle racers do not know any other drivers or people who ride motorcycles. The drivers do not know anything about the other racers. Therefore, drivers are not able to recognize other racers in a race, so there is no opportunity to say, “Hey, there is a bad guy over there riding a motorcycle” or “I will run this guy over in the opposite lane.”

Other people will attempt to use motorcycles to purposely hurt a racer. They will attempt to go fast in the opposite lane of the track in an attempt to knock the rider or rider’s motorcycle out of the race. There is no way for a racer to win an ordinary motorcycle race, unless that racer is running the exact speed limit. There is no way for a racer to win a race if another racer is trying to purposefully hurt others. This is not a good thing to do, since many of the people who do this are dangerous people who want to hurt other people.
