Badminton is a game played using a racquet and a badminton court. Unlike tennis, badminton is played on a badminton court. The game has origins in 18th century India, but badminton has been prevalent in England since the 19th century.The game was further popularized in England by Percy B. Badminton in the early 19th century. In 1901 Badminton became one of the first sports to be introduced to the British Imperial Games, an international sports competition hosted by the British to celebrate the history of the Empire.

Badminton was included as a discipline in the summer games for the first time in 1904, and then was offered as an optional sport in the subsequent two games, in 1900 and in 1912.Badminton made its Olympic debut in the Summer Games in the 1920 Olympics. Sport EventsBadminton is a sport played with racquets, similar to racquetball. In badminton, the players play individually or together as a team. A badminton game is determined by two players and their racquets and then takes place on a badminton court, typically rectangular in shape and measuring 15 x 21 meters in length. In addition to two players, badminton teams must have four players. In team badminton matches, each team uses one badminton player with two badminton racquets and one badminton player with a racquet and a badminton court to serve the ball against another team.Badminton Tournament FormatFor singles badminton, there are three different types of tournaments: All-Round Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Team. Badminton tournaments include a qualification phase, a group phase, a knockout phase, and a match-play stage.
In the qualification phase of tournaments, players must finish in the top four of their respective group. In the knockout phase, players are divided into four groups with each team playing four matches. The two highest-scoring players in each group advance to the knock-out round, and play another four matches. In the match-play phase, teams play a round-robin competition to determine the champions of each group. The knockout phase determines the two players from each group that play against each other in the finals of the competition.
Badminton Tournament RankingsFrom 1968 to 1996, the Badminton World Federation rankings of the top 32 players were given to each badminton tournament. For men, the rankings were organized into four regional groups and based on the competition results and performances during a tournament season.
After the 1996 Olympics, the BWF organized ranking systems to be used for tournaments. Teams in both women’s and men’s badminton must be composed of three players.
